Self Portraits

The pictures you see above are portraits that describe my person. There are people that may think they know me, but sometimes they have no idea. I wanted to have people think about my portraits when they say them. There are some that you can easily tell that I am smiling because I like to smile, and I like to think of myself as a very happy person that sees the positive things in life. There are other pictures that my emotion is not easily readable, this is because I wanted others to feel the pictures and be able to think more about what is happening in the portrait? or what is she thinking about? I tried to use my surroundings such as using my reflection, using the rule of thirds, and getting a good lighting in my pictures. These all played a big role in my portrait project. I feel like I got what I was looking for, which is describing me as I really am.

Portraits

These pictures were taken on October 27,2012. They were taken in Tualatin, more specifically, they were taken at my house. The portraits that you see are two really important people in my life, my mom and my little sister. I chose them because they have always been there for me, and they are really special to me. I wanted to talk to my mom and ask her about things in her past, such as her childhood and teenage years. I was able to get some expressions from her as you may see in her portraits. I had a good mother and daughter time with her thanks to this project. My sister is someone that I know enjoys the camera, therefore I chose her for my project. I knew I was going to be able to get some good pictures out of her. We also had a very nice conversation, and I was able to have a good sister bonding time.

Web Assignment #5: Beauty

How would you define beauty in photography?
I feel that beauty in photography is how you touch people. It is the emotions that you cause in people, once they see the photograph.

What are the characteristics of photographic beauty?
The characteristics of photographic beauty can be photographs that has emotion and that causes the emotion in people. Also, the different visual perspectives that it gets because everyone has a different and unique way of viewing things.

Can something "ugly" be photographed and be considered beautiful? Why? How?
Something "ugly" can be photographed and considered beautiful because someone may see it "ugly" but others may see it beautiful, not everyone has the same point of view. We all have our own way of seeing things.

Example?
For example, one may see this picture of the crayons and think that it doesn't look good because of all the shavings everywhere, but others may see it as beautiful because of how all the different colors are being displayed.

Happy Halloween!

During the pumpkin carving, it was a bit difficult trying to be precise on the lines for the adding of the depth. I found it really interesting on how we could light up the image, to make it seem like it is glowing.

Alphabet

During this project, it was kind of difficult to find things that represent the letters of the alphabet because it helps us learn to see things in our own perspective. It helps us use our eyes to be able to see things in a different perspective. The quote that I found, and decided to use, is "Don't dream your life, live your dreams."

Macro Pics

The macro pics were close ups of objects. They could be as simple as a close up of a leaf. Although finding the object to take a picture of wasn't as hard, trying to get the perfect lighting and angle was a bit of a challenge.

WEB ASSIGNMENT #4:

1. Who was Alfred Stieglitz and why is he noteworthy in the history of photography?

Alfred Stieglitz was an American photographer and modern art promoter that helped make photography accepted as a form of art. He is also recognized for his New York art galleries that he ran in the early 20th century.

2. Choose a photograph he made, and explain why you chose it as your favorite by him.

I think this photograph by Alfred Stieglitz is interesting because it really helps define the neck and the gesture that is made in the picture. Also the hands look very soft and delicate.

3. With what famous painter was he in a relationship? Who was she?  Upload a painting by her that you like.

He was in a relationship with Georgia O'Keeffe. She was a famous painter, decades before women were able to gain access to art in the colleges and universities in America. She made large paintings that were seen as close ups.

Extra: How did they influence each other in their art making?

Georgia O'Keeffe helped Alfred Stieglitz by letting him take photographs of her. Stieglitz was able to take many pictures of her character. O'Keeffe was also able to know many American modernists that were part of Stieglitz circle of artists, and they influenced many of her paintings.

Pinhole Self Portrait

The pinhole self portraits were all about the lighting and time. In order to get a good picture we needed to get the exact time according to the light. As you can see in my pictures, my timing was probably not as accurate, so that caused the positive to not turn out as good. It was also hard not to move during the picture, and that could have also affected the picture.

Tilt Shifts

The Tilt Shifts helped me realize how real things can be turned into looking really fake. They were hard to do if they weren't taken from above. Therefore, I had to do my best in trying to make them better because I wasn't able to take them from above.
